Celebrating diversity and culture at King's, we joined forces with the Filipino, Fitness Feat, India, Arabic, EcoSoc, Nepalese, Friends of Medecins Sans Frontieres, Baking, Hindu, Bangladesh and Vietnamese Societies to bring you (free) food from around the world!

Colloquium: Realities and Challenges of Mexican Contemporary Indigenous People 
When: Wednesday Nov 18, 2015, 2:30-4:30pm
Where: Stamford Street Lecture Theatre

Part of the Mexico-UK dual year, this event, co-organised with the Mexican National Comission for Indigenous Development (CDI) and the Mexican Embassy, hosted a panel with leading experts on current affairs that indigenous people face nowadays.

The Panel Featured:
  • Dr. Diana Pritchard (University of Berdforshire) has ten years over experience of applied biodiversity conservation in Latin America, working with local communities, indigenous organisations, and national and international partners, and bi- and multi-lateral organisations.
  • Emeritus Professor John Gledhill (University of Manchester) has carried out extensive personal ethnographic research in Mexico and Brazil, on urban and rural poverty, international migration, comparative political systems, social movements, and the politics of human and indigenous rights and securitization.
  • Dr. David Lehman (University of Cambridge) is engaged in a major study of the spread of ideas about multiculturalism and interculturalidad in Latin America, especially in Mexico and Brazil, focusing on the relationship between the politics of recognition, affirmative action and social justice.
  • Stephanie Black Leon is the Human Rights Officer and Coordinator of the Dual Year Mexico-UK 2015 at the Embassy of Mexico, London. She was formerly Human Rights Advisor at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Mexico; Officer for capacity-building and liaison for NGOs at the Office in Mexico of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; Research Assistant on Human Rights at the International Relations Department, Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico City; Junior Consultant at the Programme for the Protection of Social Programmes in the context of the Federal Elections of July 2006, UNDP-Mexico.

Time: 12:00-13:00
 
This was a celebration of King's vibrant diversity with societies from different countries wearing their typical attires and colourful cultural costumes and raising money for good causes.

All the proceeds from the Mexican Society went to Casa Alianza UK, an amazing charity working with homeless children in Mexico and Latin America.

- 6:00 pm: Inauguration of our Day of the Dead Ofrenda for Carlos Fuentes.
- 6:30 pm: Seminar about the Holiday
- 7:00-9 pm: Party and activities.

Mexico Seminar Series: Franz De Paula presents "Mentalmorfosis"
When: October 28, 2015, 6pm
Where: Room FWB 2.45, Waterloo Campus

Franz De Paula is the author of Mentalmorfosis, a book that is your alibi of freedom; a critical and practical system of thought, in an unusual presentation. It has been described as incendiary, provocative and irreverent and also as amazing, inspiring and brilliant.

Seminar: A university model for development in indigenous communities in Mexico
When:

Where: Room NAB.2.04, Houghton Street, WC2A 2AE London, United Kingdom

How can education become inclusive? How can countries like Mexico reduce inequality in education? Dr. Modesto Seara, a pioneer on a new way to spread higher education in excluded communities came to speak to the LSESU, UCL, and KCL Mexican societies.

Icebreaker + welcome party

Time: Welcome & Icebreaker 5-7. Party 7pm-1am

Our first event of the year for those new and returning students. After an icebreaker on the Strand, we were joined by the UCL and LSE Mexican Societies in Mestizo for a big Mexican Party.
