Mexico Seminar Series: Aztec and Roman Gods
Professor Andrew Laird, University of Warwick When: May 14, 2015, 6-7 pm Where: Strand Campus, room S-1.04 Professor Andrew Laird is a professor at the University of Warwick. His principal areas of research are in Latin poetry and prose narrative, but he also works on Roman literary biography, ancient criticism and ideas of fiction – particularly in relation to modern theory. Besides that, Professor Andrew Laird is a prolific writer and one of the most important researchers on Colonial Mexico and Spanish America. He was Visiting Professor (Cátedra Extraordinaria Méndez Plancarte)in the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at UNAM, the National Autonomous University of Mexico and held a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship during 2008-11. Much of his work highlights connections between Latin writing and indigenous knowledge in colonial Mexico. This talk about Aztec and Roman gods is part of his ongoing investigation about native traditions and Latin poetry in colonial Mexico in Fray Bernardino de Sahagún. PICTURES COMING SOON. |
Film Screening w/ Director & shamans QA: Huicholes The Last Peyote Guardians
When: May 11, 2015, 5:30 pm Where: Stamford Street Lecture Theatre, Waterloo Campus This documentary, directed by Argentinian director Hernán Vílchez, tells the story about the mystical Wixárika People, one of the last pre-Hispanic alive cultures in Latin America, and their ongoing struggle against the Mexican government and multinational mining corporations to preserve Wirikuta, their most sacred territory and home of the famous peyote cactus. Apart from hosting Hernán Vílchez, we also hosted Don José “Uxamuire” Ramírez and his son Enrique “Haikuka” Ramírez, who are part of the community the documentary speaks about. We also had artisanal crafts available to buy, the proceeds of which went towards the Wixárika community. PICTURES COMING SOON. |
Mexico Seminar Series: Violence against the Press, Civil Society, and Democracy in Mexico
Dr. Benjamin Smith, University of Warwick When: April 17, 2015, 6-7 pm Where: Strand Campus, room K-1.56 Dr. Benjamin Smith teaches Latin American history, Mexican history, and drugs industry in Latin America at the University of Warwick. His books Pistoleros and Popular Movements: The Politics of State Formation in Postrevolutionary Oaxaca (2009) and Dictablanda: Politics, Work, and Culture in Mexico, 1938-1968(2014) are fundamental for the English speaking audience to understand the history of contemporary Mexico. This talk was part of his ongoing project Dictablanda, Democracy and the PRI, Politics, the press, and the reading public in Mexico, 1940-1980, which looks at the relationship between the PRI state and the public sphere, through the study of official press and unofficial news. |
