The Experience of a Chevening Scholarship (Bilingual version)

The experience of studying in the UK under a Chevening scholarship can be divided into four parts to prevent confusions:
a) Selecting a university and a master in the UK.
b) Being accepted to study said master.
c) Requesting a Chevening scholarship (the topic for this post).
d) Getting your visa to study in the UK.

In this post we will only talk about the process to request a Chevening scholarship. However, we should not forget that these 4 points are intimately related. This relationship will be covered to a certain extent in this post.

The process to be considered as a Chevening candidate is similar to what is explained here. We say that “it is similar” because the rules change from year to year. This will be reflected in the Chevening website, but you can be pretty certain about the general process that we explain in this post. Also, given that you can’t encompass every scholar in one, we tried to sum up different comments from 2013-14 scholars from different universities in this post. 

1. What is the Chevening Scholarship? 
The Chevening scholarship is granted by the UK through the FCO (Foreign and Commonwealth Office). Depending on the country one applies from, they can be teamed up with different partner institutions. This scholarship, which has now existed for 30 years, operates in 150 countries. The number of selected students varies from country to country.

In the case of Mexico, we cannot specify how many scholarships are granted per year. In 2013-14, 17 scholarships were granted. However, maybe in previous years the numbers were different. We will use the experience of 2013-14 to comment on the following points. We do clarify that this is not an official Chevening statement, but it is worth giving it a read.

2. Requesting the Chevening scholarship 
 In order to request this scholarship, one must pay close attention to their website, to know the exact dates for the opening, as well as the requisites and procedure to follow. You should read the process carefully. It is simple enough if you plan it with time. On the webpage, there is a link with the start and closing dates for applications. In previous experiences, these dates start in August-September, and closed in November-December. We strongly suggest to NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST DAY to send your applications.

In the application, we don’t think there is an exact formula to follow which will guarantee that you’ll get the scholarship. As in every other application for postgrad degrees and scholarships, applications will be evaluated balancing the rules from the institution (that you followed the right procedure, the types of program supported, etc.), and the CV and experience of the student, their grades, recommendations, personal statement, master program, university acceptance, lack of immigration problems, and the profile of students that Chevening Alumni lists. In order to know more about this, we recommend you check their website. In section 3, we’ll speak more about the scholars’ profile.

Within this balance, it is essential that you describe clearly in your application how you followed your academic, personal and work trajectory, how you are looking for a project to consolidate your academic experience, how you will relate this to the UK, what you’ll be adding to the Chevening community, and most importantly, how Mexico and the UK will be benefited after your return. This description must be reflected in your CV, professional experience, recommendation letters, and the master you’re actually choosing, as well as the interview you will face if you are selected for the next stage (about which we will write further down).

You will possibly want to change your professional trajectory and argue it convincingly in your application for both your master and the scholarship. The scholarship could be granted to you if you have a solid argument in your application and you managed to be accepted by the university (these processes are unrelated: being accepted in university does not guarantee you a Chevening scholarship).

The experience of 2013-14 scholars varies, but most agree that what takes up the most time is getting your recommendation letters from people you have talked about your plans. It is very important for you to remember the balance we mentioned above. The person recommending you does not need to be the most important person in your organization, but someone that knows you well and can speak about your impact. It should be someone that can add to the image you’re selling of yourself, regardless of whether they have a high profile or not. This does not mean that a high profile person will not add to your application. Remember there is no set path for to follow.

It is important to check carefully the English language requirement for your master, as well as the one for the Chevening scholarship. These two will be related, and if your level is still not good enough, you should include this in your plans, and set a date for an IELTS or TOEFL exam.

As another reminder, it is important that all your academic papers are in order, such as your diploma, transcripts, translations, etc. These will be in general the same for your application to university. Depending on your program, you might also be asked some additional requirements, such as the GRE or the GMAT.

Finally, in the application, there is a section where you define the master and university you’re applying to. You should be really careful to write this in correctly, because once you send the application, this will be very important for the selection process.

3. Scholars’ Profile 
 Interestingly, this year Chevening scholars were from many different states in Mexico: Querétaro, Sonora, Nuevo León, Yucatán, Chiapas, Estado de México, Jalisco, Durango, Oaxaca, Coahuila, and Distrito Federal. Even though the main pull was from scholars from Distrito Federal (5 scholars), this does not mean that people from other states cannot be selected. Previously selected states include Tlaxcala, Nayarit, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Veracruz, Tamaulipas, Chihuahua, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, Michoacán, Guerrero, Puebla, Hidalgo, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí, Colima, and Morelos. Similarly, the universities and programs selected by these students were varied, and scattered across the UK. Finally, the professional and academic profile of scholars was also very different.

We found many different academic profiles in scholars: lawyers, architects, economists, administrators, international studies professionals, engineers, finance professionals, physicists, social scientists, and linguists. This does not mean that other professions cannot be chosen in the future. The universities these people picked were also varied, and the list includes the Universidad of Sussex, University of East Anglia, Bristol University, Manchester University, University of Nottingham, Southampton University, Oxford University, University College London, King’s College London, London School of Economics and Political Science, Imperial College, SOAS, and the University of Greenwich.

Regarding the master programs, those selected on 2013-14 include Public Policies, Public Management and Governance, LLM Law, Development Administration and Planning, Migration Studies, Economics and Financial Economics, Environmental Technology, Education Health Promotion and International Development, MA TESOL, Climate Change and Policy, Science Media Production, and Civil Engineering, among others.

We mention all this because we consider that it is important to be very clear on what you want to make your master about, and whether it is included in those supported by the Chevening scholarship. We found a marked distinction for those areas related to environmental studies, sustainability, development, economy, science, and education.

4. Lapse after submitting your Chevening application 
Once you have sent your application to the page mentioned above, there will be a long period of silence from Chevening. There will be no communication.  No one will contact you. You won’t be able to call any number. There will be no e-mail you can write to for doubts. You simply submitted. Period. This lapse was so long on the 2013-14 period that many scholars were actually surprised to receive the interview email at all. There was one that had even forgotten he had applied. We assume that due to the high number of applications, they must have some sort of internal systematized selection for interviewees. As far as we know, on 2013-14, they had 600 applicants in Mexico.

Anyway, when you receive your email for an interview, you’ll have to confirm. The interview was in the UK Embassy in Mexico City this time around. It is your responsibility to arrange your transport to Mexico City if you live in another state.

During your interview, you will have to show again the balance that was depicted in your application. There is no set recipe for the interview, but some tips proposed by some scholars are:

• Take time to do your research about the UK and to combine that information with your life, what you wrote in the interview, what you’ll add to the Chevening community and to Mexico and the UK on your return. This is not necessarily key, because the fact that you were selected for an interview in the first place means that you will have already had demonstrated some of this, or cause some interest. However, you’ll have to polish some of the most important points and add whatever you forgot on your request. 
• Others comment that they were more structured. They took some notes to and in the interview. They closed by adding relevant comments about the UK and its impact in Mexico or vice versa. Again, there is no definite recipe. 
• Take into account the relationship between Mexico and the UK. You don’t need to be an expert to note that they’re improving year by year, or that since Chicharito got to the Manchester United, cultural relationships started to expand. You don’t need too mucho experience either to notice the good relationships between Peña Nieto and David Cameron, something which will be reflected in 2015, Mexico’s year in the UK. 
• Others simply came to the interview and enjoyed a chat about their past life, and their thoughts about their present and future. Oh, and by the way, the interview is in English. 

During the interview, you will be asked for your original documents, such as diploma, passport, and university acceptance letter. Some of the scholars in 2013-14 had not been accepted yet, but you have an opportunity to submit this document scanned afterwards. In the interview, the questions will be about you, about stuff in your application regarding your master, university, the UK, and what you’ll give Mexico in your return, etc. It lasts between 35 and 50 minutes, depending on the interviewer and interviewee. The panel is made of 3 people. However, as we mentioned above, the rules may change from year to year.

5. If you have already been selected for the Chevening Community 
We received comments that for following years, they will try to improve the scholarship’s timings, to make immigration paperwork and arrivals to the UK easier. In 2013-14, the confirmation letters for the scholarship were received at the end of June. By that point, you will surely have the acceptance letter from your university.

Do remember to make your applications to the master and the scholarship at the same time. It might be the case that applying to the master beforehand is better. However, this is not a set rule, and the processes are quite independent. You should mind the timings of each university. In any case, you won’t receive the scholarship unless you’re accepted already.

Once you have received the email saying you were selected, there is a new process. You have to send your scanned acceptance letter to the email that notified you that you were selected for the interview. You should be careful to read all the emails from this address. Particularly, they will notify you about:

• Your scholarship letter which will help you for the visa application process.
  
• How to send any additional information
  
• Health certificate application
  
• Monthly stipend scheme
  
• Invitation to a ceremony in the Ambassador’s official residence
  
• Invitation to an informal event of the Chevening community in the Embassy
  

Once you have the confirmation letter, you will start your student visa application. The 2013-14 scholars were not charged for their visas, something which apparently is one of the benefits of this scholarship. However, your application for the visa is the same as any other student. If you have doubts about it you can read our previous post.  It is important to note, however, that at the start of the application, you should state that you are Chevening scholarship.

Regarding the student visa, there are different experiences. Some received it in around a month, but others had to go to the consulate 3 times because their applications were incomplete, and some even ended up arriving 1-3 weeks late to their programs. However, we’re not focusing on student visas on this post. However, it is important to note that those that had personal urgent affairs or resided outside of Mexico City mentioned that they were Chevening scholars, together with their situation and were supported regarding the times of their appointments (ONLY TIME, there is no preferential treatment in immigration services).

The third part seems like the end of the process, but in truth, it is the start of a new process, where you’ll need a lot of planning too: quitting your job to go to the UK, getting your visa, planning your arrival to the UK, looking for accommodation, etc. However, that is another story. When you arrive in the UK, you’ll be a member of a 1500 student community from 150 countries, studying in different parts of the UK, with which you’ll live unique experiences and form bonds. You’ll have a great support from the Chevening team in the UK, and you’ll participate in numerous activities throughout the academic year, which will allow you to know the UK and its culture. There is no doubt that being a Chevening scholar is an honour and a responsibility shared in many latitudes to construct an equitable, just world.

La experiencia de una beca Chevening 
Por los miembros Chevening de la KCL Mexican Society

La experiencia de estudiar en el Reino Unido con una beca Chevening se puede dividir en cuatro partes para evitar confusiones:
a) Elección de Maestría y Universidad en el Reino Unido.
b) Aceptación de la Universidad para que estudies la Maestría.
c) Experiencia para solicitar la beca Chevening (el tema de este post).
d) Visa para estudiar en el Reino Unido.

En esta ocasión solamente hablaremos del proceso para solicitar la beca Chevening. Sin embargo NO hay que dejar a un lado la relación que estos cuatro puntos tienen. Esta relación se tocará a lo largo del contenido de esta aportación.

El proceso para ser considerado para obtener una beca Chevening se acerca a lo que se explica a continuación. Decimos que “se acerca” debido a que las reglas, de un año a otro, pueden cambiar. Eso se verá reflejado en la página que habla sobre el proceso de la beca Chevening. Sin embargo, se respetará una gran parte de lo que aquí se comenta. Así mismo, la experiencia de cada becario no se puede resumir en una sola aportación, por lo que trataremos de sumar los diferentes comentarios de los becarios 2013-2014 para esta nota.

1. ¿Qué es la beca Chevening?

La beca Chevening es una beca otorgada por el Reino Unido a través de la  FCO (Foreign and Commonwealth Office), donde suman esfuerzos con otras organizaciones, dependiendo del país de la solicitud. Opera en alrededor de 150 países. La cantidad de alumnos seleccionados dependerá de cada país. Este año se cumplieron 30 años de la existencia de la beca Chevening.

En el caso de México, no se puede generalizar cuántas becas se otorgan cada año. Depende mucho de variables distintas.  En el año académico 2013-2014 se otorgaron 17 becas. Quizá en años previos se hayan otorgado más o menos. Desde la experiencia 2013 y 2014, se pueden comentar los siguientes puntos. Si bien esto no es un comentario definitivo ni oficial de Chevening, bien vale la pena echar un vistazo.

 2. Solicitud de la beca Chevening

Para solicitar la beca, hay que estar pendientes en la página correspondiente sobre las fechas exactas en las cuales la beca estará abierta, así como las fechas, los requisitos, y el procedimiento que se debe seguir. Hay que leer detenidamente el proceso que esto implica. Es un proceso sencillo si desde el inicio existe planificación. Dentro de la página existe un link, donde se establecerán las fechas de inicio para la solicitud y el día de cierre de la recepción de solicitudes. En experiencias previas se iniciaron en agosto-septiembre y se cerraron en noviembre-diciembre. Te recomendamos que NO esperes al último día para enviar tu solicitud.

Dentro de la solicitud, no pensamos que haya una fórmula exacta para poder obtener la beca. Como todas las becas y aceptaciones a un posgrado, existirá un grado de equilibrio entre las reglas que se mencionen para la solicitud (procedimiento, qué maestrías se apoyan y qué maestrías no se apoyan, etc.), el CV y experiencia del interesado, las calificaciones académicas, las recomendaciones, la carta de intención, el programa que se intenta cursar, que la Universidad te acepte, que no haya problemas migratorios con el Reino Unido en la solicitud para la visa de estudiante y, en este caso, lo que Chevening busca en un futuro miembro de la Red de Chevening Alumni. Dentro del equilibrio que mencionamos, es fundamental que en tu solicitud describas claramente cómo seguiste tu carrera académica, laboral y personal buscando un proyecto de vida que quieres consolidar con la experiencia académica, cómo lo relacionas con el Reino Unido, cómo le aportarás a la Comunidad Chevening, y lo más importante, cómo México y el Reino Unido se beneficiarán cuando regreses a México. La descripción debe de verse reflejada en tu CV, en tu experiencia profesional, en las cartas de recomendación, en la maestría que eliges,  y en la entrevista que te hagan previa al otorgamiento de la beca (de la entrevista se hablará más adelante).

 Posiblemente quieras elegir algún cambio en tu carrera profesional, y lo argumentes bien en tu solicitud, y en la maestría que elijas (si es que la maestría forma parte de las que apoya la beca Chevening). Podría llegar a ser el caso que te otorguen la beca si construyes un argumento sólido en tu solicitud (CV, carta, recomendaciones), así como obtener la aceptación de la maestría a la cual solicitaste (que son dos procesos distintos, y no se relacionan. No porque te acepten en una Universidad significa que te darán la beca Chevening).

 Quizá la experiencia de los becarios 2013-2014 varía, pero existe una inclinación a que lo más tardado es planificar el envío de las cartas de recomendación con las personas con las que hayas platicado sobre el tema y que te quieran recomendar. Es muy importante que recuerdes el equilibrio del que se habla en las partes de arriba. Consideramos que la persona que te recomienda no forzosamente debe de ser la persona más importante en tu organización, sino que debe de ser una persona que te conozca, que conozca tu impacto, que consideres pueda aportar- al momento de recomendarte- al discurso que estas vendiendo dentro de tu solicitud, y que no forzosamente deba de tener un perfil de primer plano. Sin embargo, esto no significa que las personas con un perfil de primer plano no abonen a tu recomendación. Te repetimos que no existe una fórmula exacta para la solicitud. Es un equilibrio de variables diversas.

 No se pretende dejar obviada la parte del inglés. Sin embargo, solamente a manera de recordatorio, es importante que veas cuál es el nivel de inglés requerido por la maestría que buscas, así como lo que requiere la solicitud de Chevening. Habrá una relación en el nivel de inglés que te pide la Universidad y la beca Chevening. Si tu nivel no es el adecuado, te recomendamos que lo antes posible planifiques y agendes las fechas correspondientes para presentar los exámenes IELTS o TOEFL según sea el caso.

También a manera de recordatorio, es importante que tengas toda la parte académica en orden. Título profesional, certificado de estudios (transcripts), traducciones necesarias, etc. Esto se empata con tu solicitud a la maestría. De alguna forma, estarás solicitando tanto a la maestría como a la beca, paralelamente, así que por ambos lados te estarán pidiendo casi la misma información.  Dependiendo de la maestría, como requisito de la maestría y la Universidad, habrá que checar si no tienes algún otro requisito, ya sean exámenes como el GRE o el GMAT.

 Finalmente, en la solicitud existe un apartado donde defines las maestrías y la Universidad a la cual estás solicitando en el Reino Unido. Confirma bien el nombre de la maestría y la Universidad a la cual estas solicitando, ya que una vez que envíes la solicitud esas universidades se tomarán en cuenta para los siguientes filtros del proceso de selección para obtener la beca Chevening.

3. El Perfil de los Becarios

De una forma interesante, este año la elección tuvo becarios que provenían de diversos Estados de la República Mexicana: Querétaro, Sonora, Nuevo León, Yucatán, Chiapas, Estado de México, Jalisco, Durango, Oaxaca, Coahuila y Distrito Federal. Por supuesto que el mayor pull provenía de becarios provenientes del Distrito Federal, con 5 becarios. Esto no significa que en el futuro no se pueda elegir a becarios de estados como Tlaxcala, Nayarit, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Veracruz, Tamaulipas, Chihuahua, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, Michoacán, Guerrero, Puebla, Hidalgo, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí, Colima o Morelos, como ya lo ha habido anteriormente. Así mismo las maestrías y las universidades a las cuales estos becarios fueron admitidos  fueron diversas, y su localización cubrió una parte interesante del Reino Unido. Finalmente, el perfil académico y profesional de cada uno de los becarios era distinto.

Encontramos el siguiente perfil académico en los becarios: abogados, arquitectos, economistas, administradores, internacionalistas, ingenieros, financieros, físicos, ciencias sociales e idiomas. Esto no significa que en el futuro no puedan aceptar becarios con otros perfiles.

Las universidades que eligieron los becarios del año académico 2013-2014 varían. En la lista están la Universidad de Sussex, University of East Anglia, Bristol University, Manchester University, University of Nottingham, Southampton University, Oxford University, University College London, King’s College London, London School of Economics and Political Science, Imperial College, SOAS y la Universidad de Greenwich.

Las maestrías que eligieron los becarios del año académico 2013-2014 varían. Entre ellas están maestrías en Políticas Públicas, Public Management and Governance, LLM Law, Development Administration and Planning, Migration Studies, Economics and Financial Economics, Environmental Technology, Education Health Promotion and International Development, MA TESOL, Climate Change and Policy, Science Media Production y Civil Engineering, entre otras.

Lo anterior se menciona ya que consideramos que dentro de solicitud, es importante saber sobre qué quieres hacer tu maestría, y si este sector entra dentro de los que apoya la beca Chevening. Encontramos que hay una carga marcada entre estudios que tienen que ver con el Medio Ambiente, Sustentabilidad, Desarrollo, Economía, Ciencias, y  Educación.

4.  Periodo post-solicitud beca Chevening

Como comentamos al principio, esta aportación no hablará tanto de tu elección de maestría y Universidad en el Reino Unido, o bien del proceso para solicitar a esa maestría. Sin embargo, dentro del proceso de la beca Chevening, existen varios filtros relacionados con la parte de la Universidad seleccionada.

Una vez que enviaste tu solicitud a la beca Chevening en la página web que se menciona arriba, y dentro de las fechas establecidas, existirá un periodo largo de incomunicación con Chevening. No habrá nada de comunicación. Nadie te contactará. No podrás llamar a ningún teléfono. No habrá algún correo al cual dirigirte. Simplemente enviaste tu solicitud y listo. Incluso varios becarios de México 2013-2014 recibieron el correo referente a una entrevista con sorpresa.  Uno en particular ya se había olvidado que había solicitado. Asumimos que dado el alto número de solicitudes, existirá alguna sistematización interna para elegir posibles candidatos a entrevista, y posterior a eso, enviarles la notificación para una fecha y lugar de la entrevista. Tenemos entendido que en el periodo 2013-2014 se recibieron alrededor de 600 solicitudes para la beca.

De cualquier modo, una vez que recibes el correo de entrevista, hay que confirmar. La entrevista, a menos que haya futuros cambios, se lleva a cabo en el Distrito Federal en la Embajada del Reino Unido. Tendrás que armar la logística para poder llegar a la entrevista si vives en otro estado.

Nuevamente, durante la entrevista deberás demostrar el equilibro que plasmaste en tu solicitud y en el discurso global que estarás platicando con el panel. En general no hay alguna receta para la entrevista. Sin embargo algunos tips que otros becarios 2013-2014 comentan son:

• Tómate el tiempo de navegar e investigar cómo puedes potencializar el universo de información que se refleja en las páginas oficiales del Reino Unido con tu equilibrio de vida, lo que reflejaste en tu solicitud, qué aportaras a la Comunidad Chevening y qué le aportaras a las relaciones entre México y Reino Unido a tu llegada. Este ejercicio no es la clave de la solicitud. Para haberte seleccionado para la entrevista, claramente ya habrás demostrado algún vínculo o habrás causado interés en alguno de los panelistas y querrá conocerte más. En este caso, simplemente habrá que cerrar puntos finos que quieras sumar y aportar que olvidase plasmar en la solicitud. Quizá sea el caso. Quizá no sea el caso.
• Algunos otros becarios en la solicitud 2013-2014 comentan que fueron más estructurados. Para la entrevista tomaron notas. Llevaron pequeñas notas. Hicieron anotaciones durante la entrevista. Cerraron con broche de oro con comentarios relevantes y actuales del universo del Reino Unido y su impacto en México, o viceversa, etc. Repetimos, no existe una receta definitiva.
• Toma en cuenta las relaciones actuales entre México y Reino Unido. No se necesita ser un experto para notar que año con año mejoran, que en los pasados 4 años la llegada del Chicharito al Manchester United fue un detonador clave para las relaciones culturales, así como tampoco se debe de ser un experto en descifrar la excelente relación que existe entre el Presidente Enrique Peña Nieto y el Primer Ministro David Cameron. Esto se verá reflejado en uno de los eventos de más relevancia en el año 2015: el mes de México en el Reino Unido, y el mes del Reino Unido en México.
• Otros simplemente llegaron, se sentaron, y disfrutaron de una charla sobre su vida en el pasado, en el presente y en el futuro. Por cierto, la entrevista es en inglés.

Durante la entrevista, te pedirán el título profesional original, el pasaporte vigente, así como alguna aceptación de universidades. En el caso de varios becarios mexicanos 2013-2014 aún no tenían la aceptación de la Universidad. No habrá problema. Más adelante existirá la oportunidad de que una vez que se reciba la aceptación, si eres seleccionado para la beca Chevening, envíes escaneada la aceptación. En la entrevista, las preguntas serán sobre ti, sobre casos concretos, y temas de tu solicitud relacionados con la maestría, la universidad, el Reino Unido, tu aportación a tu regreso, etc. Es una entrevista de entre 35 minutos y 50 minutos. Depende de cada entrevistado y cada entrevistador. El panel era de 3 personas. Ahora bien, como comentamos al inicio, quizá las reglas cambien. Habrá que estar pendientes cada año con los procedimientos.

5. Si ya fuiste seleccionado para ser parte de la Comunidad Chevening.

Nos comentaron que en los siguientes años se hará lo posible para que la confirmación y selección de becarios se haga en fechas más estratégicas para que los trámites migratorios y el inicio de cursos a la llegada en el Reino Unido se facilite. En el caso de los becarios 2013-2014, las confirmaciones de la obtención de la beca Chevening se dieron a finales de junio.  Para ese entonces, seguramente ya deberás de tener alguna aceptación de la maestría y la Universidad a la que solicitaste.

No dejes de solicitar oportuna y paralelamente a la beca Chevening y a la maestría. Quizá sea importante enviar primero la solicitud a la maestría. Quizá sea el caso. Quizá no. No existe una regla, y los procesos no están relacionados internamente. Son separados. Habrá que ver también los tiempos de las solicitudes de las universidades. Pero para poder obtener la beca, deberás de tener una aceptación de las elecciones que hiciste en tu solicitud.

Una vez que recibes el correo de que fuiste seleccionado, lo que sigue es un proceso nuevo. Habrá que enviar escaneada la carta de aceptación a la dirección de correo electrónico que te notificó de la entrevista y de que fuiste seleccionado. Y habrá que estar pendiente de los correos que provengan de esa cuenta de correo electrónico.

En particular te notificarán acerca de:

• La carta en donde establecen que te apoyarán con la beca Chevening para que solicites la visa de estudiante.
• Envío de información que haga falta.
• Formulario de certificado de salud. 
• Esquema de pago de beca mensual.
• Invitación a ceremonia de entrega en la residencia del embajador/ora.
• Invitación a evento informal de la Comunidad Chevening en México en la Embajada del Reino Unido.
  

Una vez teniendo la carta de fondos, empezarás tu solicitud a la visa de estudiante. En el caso de los becarios 2013-2014,  la visa de estudiante no tuvo ningún costo. Al parecer esto es parte de los beneficios de la beca Chevening. Sin embargo todo el proceso migratorio lo debes de seguir como cualquier  ciudadano mexicano que solicita una visa. Si tienes dudas al respecto, puedes consultar nuestro post anterior al respecto.  Un punto importante es que al momento de solicitar dentro de la página para la visa de estudiante, hay un apartado donde es diferente a los otros estudiantes: al inicio de la solicitud en línea para la visa de estudiante, debes establecer que eres beneficiario de apoyo o beca del Reino Unido.

Con respecto a la visa de estudiante en el Reino Unido hubo diferentes experiencias, desde los que se tardaron casi un mes en recibirla o fueron en 3 ocasiones porque les faltaron cosas, hasta los que llegaron tarde a su programa en el Reino Unido (tarde, una semana, dos, o tres). Pero bueno, como mencionamos arriba, esta aportación no hablará sobre el tema migratorio y la visa de estudiante en el Reino Unido. Sin embargo es importante mencionar que algunos becarios 2013-2014 al llegar a tramitar la visa, tenían diversas urgencias, o no habitaban en la Ciudad de México, y por razones de presupuesto, vuelos, etc., al llegar a la cita, mencionaban esto, que eran becarios Chevening, que venían del Norte, del Sur del país, y que por tráfico y demás llegaron 15 minutos tarde a la cita, y en ocasiones, existió una atención cordial para apoyarlos en temas de horario. Solamente en temas de horario. No hubo trato preferencial para otros temas migratorios que te piden para la visa de estudiante.

La tercera parte pareciera el fin del proceso, pero es el inicio de otro proceso donde debes planificar nuevamente: dejar el trabajo o lo que estés haciendo para viajar al Reino Unido, tramitar la visa, planificar tu llegada al Reino Unido, buscar dónde vivir, etcétera. Sin embargo, eso es otra historia. A tu llegada al Reino Unido serás parte de una familia de alrededor de 1500 estudiantes de 150 países, localizados en diferentes puntos del Reino Unido, con los cuales vivirás experiencias únicas y forjaras amistades que sumarán a tu red, a tus proyectos, y a tu vida. Tendrás un excelente apoyo de parte del equipo de Chevening en Reino Unido, y contarás con diversas actividades a lo largo del año escolar que te permitirán conocer el Reino Unido su cultura. Sin duda, ser un becario Chevening es un honor y una responsabilidad compartida en diversas latitudes para construir un mundo con equidad y justicia.

Finalmente, antes de despedirnos quizá también podrías platicar con algún otro Alumni de Chevening. Ya sea por el interés de alguna maestría en particular, por su desarrollo profesional actual, por su experiencia en la solicitud, por su experiencia en el Reino Unido, por la universidad que eligió, etc. La mayoría de los contactos tienen correo electrónico, y la red incluye Chevening de 150 países.
