How to get an ATAS certificate / Cómo conseguir el certificado ATAS

The ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) certificate is a document that states that you won’t use the knowledge acquired in your postgrad degree for illegal means, such as making weapons of mass destruction. Therefore, getting this paper is only necessary for students in certain areas, including science, engineering, and technology.

If your degree states that you need the ATAS, it is absolutely mandatory for you to present it during your student visa (Tier 4) application. If you don’t have it, your visa will be rejected. Therefore, it is very important for you to find out if your degree requires it before applying for the visa. Most times, the offer letter you receive from your university will state if you need an ATAS, but if you’re in doubt, it is a good idea to email your program coordinator at uni. 

If you do require an ATAS, you can apply to get it a maximum of 6 months before your visa application. After that time, it will expire. Usually, it takes 20 working days for your ATAS to be processed, counting from the day you submit your application. However, if you’re requesting it during peak season (July to September), it can take up to two months. Therefore, the sooner you request it, the better. 

You can apply to the ATAS on this webpage. There, you’ll have to fill out a form. You’ll need your offer letter, which will state the JACS code for your program, a research statement, your passport number, and the contact details for two referees. These two people might or might not be contacted by the ATAS office, depending on your professional background. 

When you fill out the form, it will be very important that the data in your offer letter coincides with the application. Make sure to write the referees’ contact details correctly. If your application has mistakes, you’ll be contacted by the ATAS personnel, and your application will be delayed. When you finish filling out the form, you’ll receive an email stating that your application has been submitted, with an attachment from the FCO (Foreign & Commonwealth Office). If you don’t receive it, I recommend that you start over.

If you send an email to the ATAS office (FCO) asking about your application, they will take about a week and a half to answer you. Ideally, you should ask your uni. After having received the “application submitted” email, it will take at least 20 days to receive a second email with the subject “Applicant Approved”. Your ATAS certificate will be attached. If you haven’t received this email after 20 days, you should ask your uni to enquire about your ATAS. Mention that 20 days have already passed. Don’t worry: your university knows that this is a highly bureaucratic thing, so they will help you in anything you need.

El certificado ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) es un documento británico que acredita que no eres un persona que va a emplear los conocimientos adquiridos en tu posgrado para fines ilegales como hacer armas de destrucción masiva. Por ello, tramitar el documento sólo es necesario para futuros estudiantes en ciertas áreas de ciencia, ingeniería o tecnología. 

Si requieres ATAS, éste es un documento 100% necesario para solicitar la visa de estudiante británica (Tier 4). Si no lo tienes, la solicitud de visa será rechazada, por lo cual es importante saber si lo necesitas. En ocasiones, la carta de oferta menciona si necesitarás ATAS, pero si tienes duda, sería bueno enviar un email a tu programa de posgrado. 

Si necesitas ATAS, debes solicitarlo cuando mucho 6 meses antes del trámite de la visa (un ATAS es válido por 6 meses). Usualmente tarda 20 días hábiles en expedirse el certificado ATAS desde la solicitud en línea, aunque algunas veces puede tardar hasta dos meses, sobretodo en temporada alta (julio-septiembre). Así que mientras más pronto lo tramites, mejor. 

Puedes solicitar el ATAs en esta página, donde tendrás que llenar un formulario. Lo más indispensable que necesitas es tu carta de oferta, donde debe venir el código JACS de tu posgrado y un “research statement”, además de tu número de pasaporte. También te pedirán datos de al menos dos personas que te avalen, a quienes los de la oficina del ATAS pueden contactar o no, dependiendo de tus antecedentes profesionales. 

Al momento de llenar el formulario, asegúrate de que todo sea consistente con los datos de la carta de oferta que te dio tu universidad. También asegúrate de escribir los datos completos de tus referencias. Si hay inconsistencias en tu formulario, los de ATAS te contactarán y el proceso se retrasará. Una vez terminado el formulario, recibirás el correo “Application submitted” con un archivo adjunto proveniente del FCO (Foreign & Commonwealth Office). Si no lo recibes, recomiendo llenarlo de nuevo. 

Si envías un  correo a la oficina de ATAS (FCO) preguntando sobre tu solicitud, se tardarán al menos semana y media en contestar. Lo ideal es preguntar a tu universidad. Después de haber recibido el correo “Application submitted”, pasarán por lo menos veinte días hábiles antes de recibir un segundo correo, titulado “Applicant Approved”, con el certificado ATAS adjunto. Si después de los veinte días aún no lo recibes, lo ideal es que pidas a tu universidad que ellos pregunten sobre el estado de tu ATAS, mencionando que ya han pasado veinte días hábiles. No te preocupes, los de tu universidad saben lo burocrático del proceso y te apoyarán en lo que necesites.
